Hobby Boxing – Fitness for the Body and Mind

Sep 14

There’s nothing like the thrill of a well organized and publicized boxing fight.  The ring announcer, the punters and fans screaming from around the ring and two boxers, squared off against each other, each with the determination to win the fight.  It’s a test of physical and emotional dedication as well as skill and talent, making it one of the simplest, yet most demanding sports in the world.  Even the Olympic committee added it to the list of contested disciplines at the summer games and it has been an Olympic Sport ever since 1904.

Professional boxing offers enormous amounts of money for everyone involved which makes it an appealing career for any amateur boxers.  One example is the upcoming Floyd Mayweather versus Victor Ortiz fight which sees Ortiz defending the WBC Welterweight world championship and because of the promoter’s deal with HBO, a portion of the pay per view sales will go to the boxers, making the prize money in the tens of millions for the winner and only slightly less for the loser of the fight.

But boxing isn’t all about the money.  Many people who practice boxing training routines as a hobby never even get into the ring and use the training because of its rigorous focus on fitness and stamina as well as teaching and instilling a discipline into those that practice it similar to that of martial arts.  Others fight in amateur leagues that are run very well and organized professionally to ensure that they are safe for the participants.  Often small amounts of prize money are available in these amateur league fights.

Boxing is a surprisingly social sport with training taking place in dedicated gyms where everyone is there to enjoy the same sport as you are and often lasting friendships can be forged while sharing the blood, sweat and tears of boxing as a hobby.
