Studying Nutrition

Everyone can benefit from learning about how the foods we eat on a daily basis affect our bodies.  Some foods help us to function in a variety of ways while others put a wrench in the works.  The things you eat may sustain you throughout the day or they could fizzle out quickly, leaving you hungry again in an hour.  And of course, even nutritious items that are eaten in excess can cause you to gain unhealthy amounts of weight.  So whether you’re interested in dropping a few pounds, you want to feel more energized throughout the day, you’re simply looking to improve your health, or all of the above, taking the time to learn about nutrition can help you to find the answers you’re looking for and reach all of your health goals.  Here are just a few areas you may want to look into.

1.  Protein and carbs.  These two types of nutrients cover a pretty wide variety of foods.  Meats and animal products generally comprise the protein category while carbohydrates can come from foods as diverse as whole grains (pasta, bread, etc.), beans, and vegetables (although some, like potatoes and corn, for example, are much higher in carbs than others, like leafy greens).  In terms of nutrition, these foods offer a slow-burning form of energy that will help you to feel full longer.  But you need to be careful.  When paired with sugars and fats or eaten in excess, they can definitely lead to unhealthy weight gain.

2.  Fats and sugars.  As evidenced above, fats and sugars often fall on the “bad” list.  But this doesn’t mean they should be banned.  In fact, they do have some nutritional value, especially fats, and when taken in small doses, they can do good things for you.  Natural sugars, like those found in fruits and juices, can give you a boost when you’re feeling tired (without the crash you suffer from processed sugars).  And when you ingest good fats (unsaturated), they will aid in cell function, keep your skin glowing and elastic, and even reduce the risk for ailments like heart disease and diabetes.

3.  Fruits and vegetables.  In general, you can’t go wrong consuming an abundance and variety of fruits and vegetables.  They help to hydrate your body and deliver essential nutrients like vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, all of which help to keep you healthy and strong.

4.  Vitamins, minerals, and supplements.  No matter how much you eat, you probably can’t get all the vitamins and minerals you need from your food.  For this reason, you may need to add supplements to your diet.  Of course, many people think that adding herbal supplements will not only help them to get healthy, but also to lose weight.  But as evidenced by the ephedrine diet pills that saturated the market a few years ago, you should be very careful about the type of supplements you add to your diet.

5.  Water.  Does water even have nutrients?  Well, not exactly, but it certainly does offer a lot of health benefits.  It keeps every part of your body hydrated, aids in digestion, and basically keeps your body functioning normally, so don’t forget to add plenty of water to any healthy nutrition plan.
