Taking Up Sports for Fun and Fitness

When you begin to consider the myriad of activities that could fill your free time, you may want to look for some that offer not only fun, but also some added value.  Sure you can sit on the couch comparing old films to their current remakes, or sequester yourself in a dark room with your miniatures or your comic collection; you could even add a weekly poker game with friends to your schedule of events.  But all of these hobbies have one thing in common: they’re sedentary.  If you want to take on an activity that not only occupies your mind, but also helps you to look and feel better (while improving your overall health) then perhaps you should consider trying a new sport for fun and fitness.

It doesn’t really matter which sport you choose, as long as you try something new and give yourself time to develop.  You may have an easier time choosing if you start with sports that you enjoy watching.  You can probably find adult leagues in your area for baseball, football, soccer, hockey, and even some lesser known sports.  Some will require you to try out, but unless you are pretty confident in your abilities you might want to avoid these more competitive leagues.  If you’re just staring out, you should consider joining a group that allows you a bit of a learning curve instead.  Even if you’re not terribly athletic, you can change your body, improve your level of fitness, and increase your skill.  But it will take time and effort; you simply have to see the value in doing something new and different.

Now, you might be thinking to yourself that it would be a lot easier to get a gym membership and hit the treadmill a few days a week.  And you’re probably right.  However, you’re missing out on a couple of major benefits if you go this way.  While you’ll certainly enjoy the results of regular exercise when it comes to getting in shape, you’re going to forego a lot of fun.  Not only will sports allow you to get out of doors and into a dynamic environment (rather than beingstuck behind the bar of a treadmill, walking nowhere and watching the tube); they’ll also provide a team environment that will help you to connect with new people even as you strengthen and tone your muscles, improve your cardio-pulmonary performance, and increase your level of fitness.

You can find dozens of ways to make a hobby out of a sport.  You could follow professional teams and bet on them, collect memorabilia, or use a sports directory to find local teams to support.  But wouldn’t you rather jump into the action by playing a sport yourself?  The benefits go far beyond what you’ll get out of most hobbies.  You can not only discover a fun way to spend your time and meet new people; you’ll also be working towards improved overall health and a body that feels and looks better than ever.
