What about boxing as a hobby?

Oct 28

Whilst waiting for the much anticipated fight between Juan Manuel Marquez II and Manny Pacquiao to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand on the 12th of November 2011, it may be interesting to see if it takes a special kind of person to be interested and involved in boxing.

Boxing, although you are surrounded by a team of trainers, physiotherapist and life coaches, is in essence an individual sport.  It is simply between two people in a single ring.  Hence, many boxers cannot be considered team players, as there simply isn’t a team in the actual physical part of the sport.  Many great boxers can be very egocentric and believe very vocally in their own abilities – one only needs to look at Mohammed Ali to understand that.

Many people see boxing as nothing else than a legal display of violence (or illegal in some cases) although boxers do not necessarily have an interest in blood and violence.  It is a sport in which you need to be trained in physical strength, reflexes and endurance.  Whether you like the sport or not it has to be acknowledged that boxing is very technical and not to be compared with a punch-up in a dark alley after too many pints of beer.

Boxing is also very popular as an exercise form, and many gym sports have been developed based on boxing, such as boxercise and tae bo.  These sports are particularly popular amongst women.  Boxing is one of the quickest ways to get the entire body into shape and it also requires a lot of physical and mental discipline.  This is why many youth and community centres for troubled teens will offer boxing as a sport – although, of course, those who are against boxing are very opposed to this, saying that it encourages troubled teens to be violent.

The upcoming mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez is one more reason for teenagers to become fans of boxing and why not choose it as a hobby. We invite you to watch Pacquiao vs Marquez live streaming and see if you are attracted by boxing.
